Changes to Services Between Carlisle and Barrow-in-Furness

Due to emergency engineering works at Bransty Tunnel, the railway between Corkickle and Whitehaven is currently closed until further notice. 


Timescales are currently unknown as to when the railway will fully reopen.


A revised timetable, which is subject to change, is running with trains running between:

  • Barrow-in-Furness and Corkickle
  • Whitehaven and Carlisle. 


Rail replacement buses are running between Corkickle and Whitehaven.

There is currently no industrial action taking place.


However, Sunday services are subject to change.

Please note that on days of strikes, where no train is scheduled to run - there will be no replacement bus to taxi services provided, so please do not travel unless you can safely complete your journey.

Engineering works

Engineering work is an essential part of maintaining and upgrading the rail network which we rely on every day. The majority of planned engineering work takes place overnight or at the weekend. 


You can check with National Rail Enquires or visit one of the following websites  to find any changes to train times that may affect your journey, some of which may involve rail replacement coach services when trains are unable to run:

  • Avanti West Coast
  • TransPennine Express.
